Gunman takes upstate N.Y. school principal hostage

A Pine Plains, N.Y., town official says a gunman has taken a high school principal hostage, the Associated Press reports.

Students are reported to be safe.

The Poughkeepsie Journal reports that the Stissing Mountain High School is on lockdown.

The newpaper quotes one parent, Bob Lamont, as saying the gunman appears to be the parent of one of two students who were in the building at the time the incident occurred.

Update at 10:29 a.m. ET: The AP says the gunman has surrendered.

The AP quotes an unidentified state government official as saying the gunman was a former student. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly, says the gunman surrendered about 10 a.m. ET.

Town Supervisor Gregg Pulver says the gunman is a man in his 40s. He says no shots were fired.

The school is about 90 miles north of New York City.
